A reveller protects herself from the sun as she takes part in St. Bartholomew's procession at the beach of Sao Bartolomeu do Mar, Portugal, 2011. A ritual expected to heal and protect children from the Devil began at daybreak with children carrying black roosters around St. Bartholomew church three times, kissing a statue of the saint and then heading to the beach where they are dipped three times in the sea to complete the centuries old ritual. © Paulo Duarte
